Sex Toy Materials

Do you look at the packaging on sex toys and wonder what it's made out of or how safe it is? Well now you can know! Check out our list of common sex toy materials and keep yourself informed and healthy!

Silcone:

 

Silicone is a great material that is non-porous and phthalate free, easily cleaned and can be disinfected.

 

To Disinfect: Boil for 5 to 10 minutes in a pot or put on the top rack of a dishwasher and run without soap. Do NOT attempt to disinfect toys that have a motor or electrical components. If you are sharing a toy that cannot be disinfected between partners, or using a toy for vaginal and anal use, we recommend using a condom to prevent the spread of STDs or infection.

 

To Clean: Wash with a mild soap and water or toy cleaner.

 

Notes: Do not combine a silicone toy with a silicone lubricant. Silicone lubricants will break down and ruin silicone toys. Silicone can be safely cooled or warmed according to preference. Do not freeze or heat a silicone toy with a motor or electircal components.

 

**Never use harsh chemicals to clean or disinfect sex toys** 

Stainless Steel:

 

Stainless steel is a great non-porous, phthalate free material that can be warmed up or cooled for different sensations. It is easily cleaned and can be disinfected. 

 

To Disinfect: Boil for 5 to 10 minutes in a pot or put on the top rack of a dishwasher and run without soap. Do NOT attempt to disinfect toys that have a motor or electrical components. If you are sharing a toy that cannot be disinfected between partners, or using a toy for vaginal and anal use, we recommend using a condom to prevent the spread of STDs or infection.

 

To Clean: Wash with a mild soap and water or toy cleaner.

 

Notes: Silicone and water based lubircants are safe to use with stainless steel toys. This material can burn and freeze. Please exercise caution when heating and cooling a stainless steel toy. Stainless steel toys that are scratched can harbor bacteria. We recommend replacing or using a condom with scratched stainless steel toys.

 

**Never use harsh chemicals to clean or disinfect sex toys**

Borosilicate (Pyrex) Glass:

 

Glass is a great material that is non-porous, phthalate free, holds temperature well, is easy to clean, and only requires a small amount of lubrication to become very slippery.

 

To Disinfect: Boil for 5 to 10 minutes in a pot or put on the top rack of a dishwasher and run without soap. Do NOT attempt to disinfect toys that have a motor or electrical component. If you are sharing a toy that cannot be disinfected between partners, or using a toy for vaginal and anal use, we recommend using a condom to prevent the spread of STDs or infection.

 

To Clean: Wash with a mild soap and water or toy cleaner.

 

Notes: Silicone and water based lubricants are safe to use with glass toys. Most glass toys come with a protective storage pouch to protect from nicks and chips however you should check the toy over before use. This material should never be exposed to extreme temperature changes as that can cause breakage.

 

**Never use harsh chemicals to clean or disinfect sex toys**

Handblown Glass:

 

Like Borosilicate (Pyrex) Glass, handblown glass is non-porous, phthalate free, holds temperature well, is easy to clean and only requires a small amount of lubrication to become very slippery.

 

To Disinfect: Handblown glass toys cannot be boiled or put in the dishwasher as it will destroy the colors in the toy. If you are sharing a toy that cannot be disinfected between partners, or using a toy for vaginal and anal use, we recommend using a condom to prevent the spread of STDs or infection.

 

To Clean: Wash with a mild soap and water or use a toy cleaner.

 

Notes: Silicone and water based lubricants are safe to use with glass toys. To Disinfect: Acrylic and Lucite toys cannot be boiled or put in the dishwasher as it will destroy the toy. If you are sharing a toy that cannot be disinfected between partners, or using a toy for vaginal and anal use, we recommend using a condom to prevent the spread of STDs or infection.

 

To Clean: Wash with a mild soap and water or a toy cleaner. 

 

Notes: Silicone and water based toys are safe to use with Acrylic and Lucite toys. Be sure to check your toy over before using it for chips or cracks.

 

**Never use harsh chemicals to clean or disinfect sex toys**

Wood:

 

Wood is typically covered in a coating that is water resistant, phthalate free, and smooth.

 

To Disinfect:  Wood Toys cannot be boiled or placed in a dishwasher. If you are sharing a toy that cannot be disinfected between partners, or using a toy for vaginal and anal use, we recommend using a condom to prevent the spread of STDs or infection.

 

To Clean: Wash with a mild soap and water or toy cleaner. Nothing abrasive should be used to clean wood toys as that can ruin the covering of the toy.

 

Notes: Silicone and water based lubricants are safe to use with wood toys. Be sure to avoid contact with hard surfaces as that can damage the toy. 

 

**Never use harsh chemicals to clean or disinfect sex toys**

Ceramic:

Ceramic is a hard, durable, strong, phthalate-free, non-porous material. 

 

To Disinfect: Place in the top rack of the dishwasher and run without soap. Do NOT attempt to disinfect toys that have a motor or electrical components. If you are sharing a toy that cannot be disinfected between partners, or using a toy for vaginal and anal use, we recommend using a condom to prevent the spread of STDs or infection.

 

To Clean: Wash with a mild soap and water or toy cleaner. Do not use abrasive chemicals or materials to clean your ceramic toy as that can scratch the toy and distort the glaze.

 

Notes: This material can be warmed and cooled. Please use caution when subjecting a ceramic toy to rapid temperature changes. Silicone and water based lubricants are safe to use with ceramic toys.

  

 

**Never use harsh chemicals to clean or disinfect sex toys**

ABS Plastic:

 

ABS plastic is a non-porous, phthalate-free, rigid material. It is a favorite for those who have an allergy to silicone.

 

To Disinfect: Place in top rack of dishwasher and run without soap. Do NOT attempt to disinfect toys that have a motor or electrical components. If you are sharing a toy that cannot be disinfected between partners, or using a toy for vaginal and anal use, we recommend using a condom to prevent the spread of STDs or infection.

 

To Clean: Wash with a mild soap and water or toy cleaner.

 

Notes: Silicone and water based lubricants are safe to use with ABS plastic toys. 

 

**Never use harsh chemicals to clean or disinfect sex toys**

Thermoplastic Rubber (TPR):

 

TPR is very similar to Elastomer (TPE). It is a slightly more rigid, poroous, durable, and phthalate-free material.

 

To Disinfect: TPR toys cannot be boiled or placed in a dishwasher. If you are sharing a toy that cannot be disinfected between partners, or using a toy for vaginal and anal use, we recommend using a condom to prevent the spread of STDs or infection.

 

To Clean: Wash with a mild soap and water or toy cleaner.

 

Notes: Silicone and water based lubricants are safe to use with TPR toys.

 

 

**Never use harsh chemicals to clean or disinfect sex toys**

Elastomer (TPE):

 

Elastomer is a soft, slightly porous, hypoallergenic, durable, and phthalate-free material. 

 

To Disinfect: Elastomer toys cannot be boiled or placed in a dishwasher. If you are sharing a toy that cannot be disinfected between partners, or using a toy for vaginal and anal use, we recommend using a condom to prevent the spread of STDs or infection.

 

To Clean:  Wash with a mild soap and water or toy cleaner. 

 

Notes: Silicone and water based lubricants are safe to use with elastomer toys. 

 

 

**Never use harsh chemicals to clean or disinfect sex toys**

Leather:

Leather is a soft resilient material, often found in harnesses, bondage accessories, and sex furniture.

 

To Disinfect: Leather toys cannot be boiled or placed in a dishwasher. If you are sharing a toy that cannot be disinfected between partners, or using a toy for vaginal and anal use, we recommend using a condom to prevent the spread of STDs or infection

 

To Clean: Use a leather cleaner. Using alcohol or other chemicals can dry out the leather.

 

Notes: Leather sex toys like harnesses, should not be shared between partners that are concerned about body fluid contamination.

 

**Never use harsh chemicals to clean or disinfect sex toys**

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), Latex, and Jelly Rubber:

 

These toys cannot be disinfected, and have been shown to contain pthalates. Because there is no bond between phthalates and the plastics they are mixed with as the plastics age and break down, phthalates are released much faster.

 

Sex toys are sold as novelties due to FDA regulations, and many companies choose to use materials that contain phthalates because it is more cost effective. 

 

Phthalates have been linked to endocrine disruption, hormone changes, birth defects, obesity, and allergies.
