Lubricant Types

Water Based Lubricant:

Water based lubricant is an excellent lubricant to use with silicone based toys. It is not recommended for use in the shower as it is not water resistant. When looking for a water based lubricant the first ingredient is "water". Water based lubricants can be thinner for general use or thicker. Thicker water based lubricant is ideal for anal play.

Silicone Base Lubricant:

Silicone based lubricant is a wonderful skin to skin lubricant. Because it is extra slippery and does not dry easily it is recommended as a lubricant for the shower. Silicone lubricant is typically thinner. Silicone lubricant should not be used with a silicone toy as the material on the toy will start to break down.

Hybrid Lubricants:

Hybrid lubricants are a wonderful way to get the long lasting slick feeling from a silicone lubricant, with the toy safe option of a water base. Hybrid lubricants are part silicone and part water base. Please be advised that you should check with the manufacturer or retailer to be certain there is not enough silicone in the hybrid to damage a silicone toy.

Flavored Lubricants:

Flavored lubricants are a wonderful addition to oral sex they can help dispel the latex taste of condoms and dental dams. Be wary as some flavored lubricants contain sugar in them, which can aggravate and cause yeast infections. Flavored lubricants that contain aspartame are safe to use for penetration. Most flavored lubricants are thinner and water based.

Aloe Based Lubricant:

Aloe based lubricants are a wonderful alternative to a water based. They last longer, are often thicker, do not get as sticky or tacky, and feel more like the body's natural lubrication. Aloe lubricants can be used with silicone toys. They can also be used in the shower, though they are not as water resistant as a silicone lubricant. Aloe lubricant can be used as an anal lubricant, although we recommend using a gel based lubricant that is specifically designed for anal play.

Common Lubricant Ingredients

Aloe and Vitamin E Extracts:

Aloe and Vitamin E extracts are frequently used in lubricants to soften and help heal the skin after sex. They are safe materials.

Alcohol:

Alcohol is frequently put into warming and tingling lubricants. It has a tendency to dry out the vagina and anus as well as cause discomfort. Alcohol can cause an uncomfortable skin reaction. The drying effect can lead to infections or some skin damage due to friction from sex.

Glycerol (Glycerine, Glycerin):

Glycerol is a sugar derivative and can cause or feed yeast infections. Both plant based and synthetic Glycerol can cause skin reactions. Synthetic Glycerol can cause more intense reactions. We recommend looking for lubrication products without this chemical.

Propylene Glycol:

Propylene Glycol is a petrol product that is frequently used in lubricants. Propylene Glycol can cause adverse skin reactions, and increased yeast infections in women. Propylene Glycol has been shown to cause some eye irritation.

Parabens:

Parabens are a preservative used frequently in lubricants and cosmetics. Parabens have been linked to breast tumors, ovarian cysts, as well as mimicking estrogen in the body which can disrupt the body's natural cell growth. Some parabens react adversely to UVB light and can lead to faster skin aging, and damaging of the DNA.
